Summary
The profiles, allergens, and history you create in Skano are stored only on your device, with no account or cloud sync. Skano also uses an anonymous usage analytics tool (PostHog) to improve the app, described below.
1. Who are we?
Skano is an iOS mobile app for scanning food allergens by barcode, distributed by an independent developer, Alexandre Paul. Contact: alexandre-paul@outlook.com.
2. Data recorded
The following is stored locally on your device:
| Data | Storage | Purpose |
|---|---|---|
| Profiles (name, declared allergens) | Local only | Tailor the verdict to each family member |
| Scan history | Local only | Find products already checked |
| Favorites and shopping list | Local only | Make grocery shopping easier |
This data stays exclusively on your device: Skano offers no account, no cloud sync, and no server for your profiles and history. Skano's publisher never has access to it.
3. Barcode scanning and Open Food Facts
Skano uses the camera to scan a product's barcode, then queries the collaborative Open Food Facts database to retrieve the matching ingredient list. Only the scanned barcode is sent to Open Food Facts for this lookup; no personal data or profile is ever sent.
4. Anonymous usage analytics (PostHog)
Skano uses PostHog (servers located in the European Union, eu.i.posthog.com) to understand how the app is used and improve it.
- Data collected: anonymous usage events (e.g. scan performed, profile created, purchase made), with no name, address, or email.
- Data not collected: name, address, email, identifiable health information, advertising identifier (IDFA).
This data is linked to a random identifier generated at install time, which cannot identify you. It is never used for advertising purposes or shared with third parties. No ad network, no other tracking tool.
5. Purchases
Unlocking Skano Plus (a one-time, non-consumable purchase) is handled entirely by Apple via StoreKit. Skano's publisher never sees or stores your payment information.
6. Retention and deletion
Since all profile and history data is stored locally, uninstalling the app permanently deletes all your data. No copy is kept elsewhere.
7. Minors
Skano can be used to manage a child's allergens under a parent's or guardian's responsibility. The app does not collect any identifiable health data and is not a medical record.
8. Disclaimer
The allergens shown come from Open Food Facts, a collaborative database that may contain errors or omissions. Skano never guarantees that a product is safe: always check the packaging before consumption.
9. Changes
Any substantial change to this policy will be reflected by an updated date at the top of this document.
